横になる means a situation where you lie down but don’t fall asleep completely, or at least you don’t intend to sleep, but just rest your body for a short time.
You can use this expression when you’re ill or tired and also when others are.
The latter example is 横になったら？ which means that why don’t you lie down?
The Japanese 横 has several meanings.
This 横 means level, almost parallel to the ground, so you can use 横 in this context.
But be careful because ‘horizontal’ in Japanese is basically translated as 水平 instead of 横.
